X-RAY Thumb (AP+LAT)

An X-Ray of the Thumb (AP + LAT) includes two views:

• AP (Anteroposterior) View – front-to-back
• Lateral View – side view

These two perspectives help provide a complete image of the thumb’s bones and joints, including the phalanges, metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, and carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

    Description

    Test Preparation

     Fasting:
    o Not required — you may eat and drink as usual.
     Clothing & Accessories:
    o Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to the hand/thumb area.
    o Remove jewelry or rings from the affected hand.
    Inform the Radiologist If:
    o You are pregnant or might be pregnant
    o You’ve had recent surgery or have implants or hardware in the thumb
    During the Procedure:
    o You’ll be asked to place your hand on the X-ray plate:
    For the AP view, your palm will face up or down depending on positioning.
    For the Lateral view, your thumb will be rotated to the side.
    o The radiologic technologist may adjust your thumb for optimal angle and visibility.
    o You must stay still during the exposure to ensure a clear image.
