Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is used to:
• Diagnose pheochromocytoma: A rare tumor of the adrenal glands that can cause excessive catecholamine production.
• Assess neuroblastoma: A cancer of the nerve tissue that primarily affects children, where VMA levels may be elevated.
• Monitor treatment: In patients with diagnosed pheochromocytoma or neuroblastoma, to check the effectiveness of treatments or surgery.
• Evaluate catecholamine-related conditions: Such as hyperthyroidism or stress-related disorders.
Sample Collection:
• A 24-hour urine sample is required for this test.
• The sample must be collected over a full 24-hour period to ensure an accurate measurement of VMA levels.
• The sample should be stored properly during the collection period, and in some cases, a preservative may be added.
