Description
Why It’s Done:
The Anti-TPO test is primarily ordered to:
• Diagnose autoimmune thyroid conditions such as:
o Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (most common cause of hypothyroidism)
o Graves’ disease (causes hyperthyroidism)
• Evaluate unexplained thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism)
• Monitor progression or treatment response in autoimmune thyroid diseases
• Investigate causes of goiter or thyroid nodules linked to autoimmune activity
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed.
• A blood sample will be drawn from a vein, usually in the arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any thyroid medications or supplements you are taking.
• No fasting is required for this test.
