An X-Ray Middle Finger (AP + LAT) is a diagnostic imaging test used to examine the middle finger (usually of one hand) from two different views:

• AP (Anteroposterior) view – taken from front to back of the finger
• LAT (Lateral) view – taken from the side of the finger

These views help provide a clear picture of the bones, joints, and soft tissues of the middle finger. It is commonly done to detect:

• Fractures or dislocations
• Joint inflammation or arthritis
• Bone infections (osteomyelitis)
• Foreign objects
• Tumors or bone cysts

    Description

    Test Preparation

    • Before the Test:
      • No fasting or special preparation is required.
      • Remove rings, jewelry, or metal objects from the hand or wrist area.
      • Inform the radiology staff if:
      o You are pregnant or may be pregnant
      o You have a history of injuries or surgeries on the affected finger
    •  During the Test:
      • You’ll be asked to place your hand on the X-ray table.
      • The technician will position your hand in:
      o AP view: palm facing up
      o Lateral view: side of the finger facing the X-ray machine
      • Stay very still to avoid blurry images.
      • The test is quick and painless, typically completed in a few minutes.
