Description
Why It’s Done:
• To evaluate kidney function and how well the kidneys regulate sodium.
• To diagnose or monitor conditions such as:
o Hyponatremia (low sodium levels)
o Hypernatremia (high sodium levels)
o Kidney diseases
o Adrenal gland disorders (like Addison’s disease or hyperaldosteronism)
o High blood pressure (especially if salt sensitivity is suspected)
• To assess dietary sodium intake.
Preparation:
• Fasting: Not required.
• Sample Collection: Collect all urine over a 24-hour period in a special provided container.
• Instructions:
o Discard the first urine of the day when starting the test, then collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including the first urine on the second day.
o Keep the urine container refrigerated or in a cool place during the collection period.
• Medication: Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as some drugs (like diuretics) can affect sodium levels.
• Diet: Follow any specific dietary instructions given by your healthcare provider, especially regarding salt intake.
