Description
Purpose of the Test:
• Diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), particularly when the diagnosis is uncertain
• Detect Sm antibodies, which are considered a hallmark for diagnosing lupus
• Help differentiate SLE from other autoimmune disorders, as Sm antibodies are relatively specific to lupus
• Monitor the progression of lupus and its activity by tracking antibody levels over time
• Assess autoimmune disease activity in patients with suspected or known SLE
What the Test Involves:
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
• The sample is tested using the Immuno Blot method, which involves separating the blood proteins, then detecting the specific Sm IgG antibodies through a blotting technique that identifies the binding of the antibody to the Sm antigens
• The presence of Sm IgG antibodies in the blood indicates a higher likelihood of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
• The test is highly specific, meaning it helps distinguish SLE from other autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma, which may present with similar symptoms
