MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) with MR Spectroscopy (MRS) is an advanced imaging technique that provides both structural and biochemical information about tissues, particularly the brain, muscles, or tumors.

• MRI produces detailed anatomical images of organs and tissues.
• MR Spectroscopy (MRS) analyzes the chemical composition of tissues by measuring metabolite levels, helping to detect biochemical changes that occur before structural abnormalities appear.

It is commonly used for:

• Brain tumors – Differentiating tumor types and assessing malignancy.
• Neurodegenerative diseases – Such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.
• Epilepsy – Identifying abnormal metabolic activity.
• Multiple sclerosis (MS) – Detecting early biochemical changes.
• Stroke – Evaluating brain damage.
• Muscle disorders & metabolic diseases – Measuring muscle energy metabolism.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    Pre-Test Guidelines:
    • Fasting:
Typically, no fasting is required unless contrast dye is used.
    • Hydration:
Drink plenty of water before the test unless instructed otherwise.
    • Medications:
Continue taking prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise.
Inform your doctor if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications (e.g., Metformin), or any neuro-related drugs.
    • Avoid Stimulants:
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking for 12 hours before the test, as they may interfere with metabolic readings.
    • Allergy & Medical History:
Inform your doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, aneurysm clips, or stents), as MRI uses strong magnetic fields.
o Let the doctor know if you are pregnant or claustrophobic.
On the Day of the Test:
    • Clothing & Accessories:
Wear loose-fitting clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, hearing aids, glasses, and metallic objects before the scan.
During the MRI + MR Spectroscopy Scan:
    • The scan takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
    • You will lie still inside the MRI machine while images are taken.
    • If contrast dye is needed, it will be injected through an IV line.
    • The MRI machine makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
    • MRS scans may take extra time as they analyze tissue biochemistry.
