An MRI of the Lower Abdomen and Pelvis is a non-invasive imaging test that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the internal organs, muscles, soft tissues, and blood vessels in the lower abdominal and pelvic regions. It helps diagnose conditions related to the intestines, bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate, lymph nodes, and surrounding structures.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    Clothing & Accessories:
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (zippers, buttons, or hooks).
    • Remove all metal objects, including jewelry, piercings, watches, and belts.
    Fasting & Hydration:
    • If contrast dye (gadolinium) is required, you may need to fast for 4–6 hours before the scan.
    • Drink plenty of water unless advised otherwise.
    Bowel Preparation (If Required):
    • In some cases, your doctor may ask you to empty your bladder before the scan or hold urine for better imaging of pelvic organs.
    • Laxatives or an enema might be prescribed for clearer images of the intestines.
    Medical History & Safety Precautions:
    • Inform your doctor if you have any metal implants, pacemakers, or cochlear implants, as they may interfere with the MRI.
    • Let the technician know if you have a history of kidney disease, as contrast dye may not be suitable.
    Pregnancy & Allergies:
    • Inform the radiologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
    • If you have a history of allergies to contrast dyes, let the doctor know.
    During the Scan:
    • The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.
    • You will need to lie still on the scanning table to avoid blurry images.
    • The machine may make loud tapping noises, so earplugs or headphones might be provided.
