MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Bilateral Lower Limb Angiography with Contrast is a diagnostic test used to visualize the blood vessels in both legs. It helps assess circulation, detect blockages, aneurysms, or other vascular conditions using a contrast dye (typically gadolinium) to enhance image clarity.

Why is it Done?

• To evaluate peripheral artery disease (PAD)
• To detect blood clots (deep vein thrombosis – DVT)
• To identify narrowed or blocked arteries
• To assess vascular conditions before surgery or treatment

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    • Fasting
      • You may be required to fast for 4-6 hours before the test, especially if contrast dye is used.
    • Hydration
      • Drink plenty of water before the test (unless advised otherwise) to help flush out the contrast dye post-exam.
    • Medications
      • Take your regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
      • Inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, diabetes medication (like Metformin), or have kidney issues.
    • Allergies & Medical Conditions
      • Inform the radiologist if you have a history of contrast dye allergies.
      • If you have kidney disease, contrast dye may require special precautions.
    • Clothing & Accessories
      • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (zippers, jewelry, belts).
      • You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
    • Implant or Device Precautions
      • Inform the technician if you have metal implants, pacemakers, cochlear implants, or aneurysm clips, as they can interfere with the MRI.
    • Claustrophobia & Anxiety
      • If you have claustrophobia, discuss with your doctor about a mild sedative before the test.
      • Some facilities offer open MRI options for comfort.
    • During the Procedure
      • You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI scanner.
      • A contrast dye will be injected into a vein (usually in the arm) to highlight the blood vessels.
      • The machine makes loud noises; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
      • The scan takes about 45-60 minutes.
    • After the Test
      • No downtime; you can resume normal activities unless sedated.
      • Drink plenty of water to help eliminate the contrast dye from your system.
      • Results are usually available in a few days.
