Test Preparation
To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:
Pre-Test Guidelines:
• Fasting:
You may need to fast for 4-6 hours before the scan if contrast dye is used.
• Hydration:
Drink plenty of water before the test unless instructed otherwise.
• Medications:
Inform your doctor about blood thinners, diabetes medications (e.g., Metformin), or kidney medications.
If you have kidney disease, a kidney function test (creatinine test) may be required before contrast administration.
• Allergy & Medical History:
Inform your doctor if you have contrast dye allergies.
Notify your doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, aneurysm clips, or stents), as MRI uses strong magnetic fields.
• Claustrophobia:
If you are claustrophobic, discuss mild sedation options with your doctor before the test.
On the Day of the Test:
• Clothing & Accessories:
Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, hearing aids, glasses, and metallic objects before the scan.
• Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol:
Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as they may affect blood circulation.
During the MRA Scan:
• The scan takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
• You will lie still inside the MRI machine while images are taken.
• Two contrast injections of gadolinium-based dye will be administered through an IV:
The first injection enhances arterial flow imaging.
The second injection enhances venous circulation imaging.
• You may feel a cool or warm sensation when the dye enters your bloodstream.
• The MRI machine makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
