Description
Why It’s Done:
• To evaluate insulin resistance, a condition where the body’s cells don’t respond properly to insulin (common in type 2 diabetes and PCOS).
• To help diagnose hyperinsulinemia (high insulin levels).
• To investigate the cause of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
• To monitor metabolic health, especially in individuals with obesity, metabolic syndrome, or a family history of diabetes.
• Often done alongside fasting glucose or glucose tolerance tests for a full metabolic assessment.
Preparation:
• Fasting is required: Do not eat or drink anything (except water) for 8 to 12 hours before the test.
• Avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours prior to testing.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, especially insulin or other drugs affecting blood sugar.
• A simple blood sample is taken from a vein, usually in your arm.
