The Insulin Fasting Test measures the level of insulin in your blood after you have fasted (not eaten) for a specific period, usually 8 to 12 hours. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. This test helps assess how well your body produces insulin and how it responds to blood sugar levels.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:
    • To evaluate insulin resistance, a condition where the body’s cells don’t respond properly to insulin (common in type 2 diabetes and PCOS).
    • To help diagnose hyperinsulinemia (high insulin levels).
    • To investigate the cause of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
    • To monitor metabolic health, especially in individuals with obesity, metabolic syndrome, or a family history of diabetes.
    • Often done alongside fasting glucose or glucose tolerance tests for a full metabolic assessment.

    Preparation:
    • Fasting is required: Do not eat or drink anything (except water) for 8 to 12 hours before the test.
    • Avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours prior to testing.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, especially insulin or other drugs affecting blood sugar.
    • A simple blood sample is taken from a vein, usually in your arm.
