Why It’s Done:
The test is performed to:
1. Diagnose Recent Influenza A Infection:
o Confirm if flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, body aches) are caused by Influenza A.
2. Differentiate Influenza A from Other Respiratory Illnesses:
o Help doctors choose appropriate treatment and management.
3. Epidemiological Surveillance:
o Track flu outbreaks and monitor infection rates.
Preparation:
• Fasting:
o Not required. You may eat and drink normally before the test.
• Timing:
o The test is most reliable when done within the first week of symptom onset, as IgM antibodies appear early in infection.
• Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider about any antiviral medications or immunosuppressants you are taking.
• Sample Collection:
o A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm.
