The Influenza A & B Antigen, Qualitative test is a rapid diagnostic test that detects the presence of influenza virus antigens (proteins) from Influenza A and B viruses in a respiratory specimen, usually a nasal or throat swab. It provides qualitative results—indicating whether influenza A, B, or neither is present, without measuring the amount of virus.

This test is commonly performed using lateral flow immunoassay techniques and provides results within 15–30 minutes.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:
    This test is performed to:
    • Quickly diagnose influenza infection in patients with flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.
    • Differentiate between influenza A and B, which can help in making clinical decisions and preventing the spread.
    • Start antiviral treatment early, if indicated.
    • Reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics, since influenza is caused by a virus.
It is especially useful during flu season, in outbreak situations, or for high-risk groups like children, the elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.

    Preparation:
    • Sample required: Nasal swab, nasopharyngeal swab, or throat swab.
    • No fasting or special preparation is required.
    • The sample should be collected soon after symptoms begin, ideally within the first 3–4 days of illness when viral shedding is highest.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking or if you’ve recently received a flu vaccine
