Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is performed to:
• Quickly diagnose influenza infection in patients with flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.
• Differentiate between influenza A and B, which can help in making clinical decisions and preventing the spread.
• Start antiviral treatment early, if indicated.
• Reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics, since influenza is caused by a virus.
It is especially useful during flu season, in outbreak situations, or for high-risk groups like children, the elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.
Preparation:
• Sample required: Nasal swab, nasopharyngeal swab, or throat swab.
• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• The sample should be collected soon after symptoms begin, ideally within the first 3–4 days of illness when viral shedding is highest.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking or if you’ve recently received a flu vaccine
