Why It’s Done:
The HSV I & II IgG test is used to:
• Determine past exposure to HSV-1 or HSV-2.
• Diagnose asymptomatic infections, especially in people at risk of transmitting herpes to others.
• Evaluate individuals with recurrent symptoms such as cold sores or genital lesions.
• Screen pregnant women to assess the risk of transmitting herpes to the newborn.
• Support diagnosis in cases of neurological symptoms potentially caused by herpes, such as encephalitis.
• Provide information prior to organ transplants, fertility treatments, or new sexual partnerships.
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• Inform your doctor if you:
o Have had recent symptoms (e.g., sores, itching, burning).
o Are taking antiviral medications.
o Have a history of herpes or known exposure.
