The HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) 1+2 Antibody IgM test detects IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an early or recent infection with HSV type 1 or type 2. HSV-1 commonly causes oral herpes (cold sores), while HSV-2 typically causes genital herpes. This blood test helps identify a primary or recent herpes infection.
The IgM antibodies are usually the first to appear in the body after infection, making this test useful in the early stages of diagnosis. However, it’s not always able to distinguish clearly between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

The HSV 1+2 IgM test is recommended to:
    • Detect recent or primary herpes infection.
    • Evaluate patients with unexplained sores, blisters, or flu-like symptoms.
    • Diagnose herpes in pregnant women, especially if they have symptoms or known exposure.
    • Assess newborns or infants suspected of having neonatal herpes.
    • Aid in the diagnosis of systemic herpes infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
Note: For long-term or past infections, an HSV IgG antibody test is more reliable.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is generally required.
    • You may be advised to avoid antiviral medication for a few days before the test if you’re taking any, but only under medical supervision.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any ongoing symptoms or recent exposures
