Description
Why It’s Done:
The HDV RT-PCR test is used to:
• Confirm active HDV infection in someone already diagnosed with Hepatitis B.
• Monitor viral load (amount of virus in the blood) in patients with chronic HBV/HDV co-infection.
• Evaluate the severity of liver disease and risk of progression to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
• Guide treatment decisions, especially when considering antiviral therapy.
• Distinguish between past and current infection, as antibody tests cannot confirm viral replication.
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein, typically in the arm.
• Inform your doctor of any antiviral medications you are taking, as they may influence test results.
