Description
Why It’s Done:
The Hb test is used to:
• Detect anemia (low hemoglobin levels), which may be due to:
o Iron deficiency
o Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
o Chronic diseases
o Blood loss
• Detect polycythemia (high hemoglobin levels), possibly due to:
o Dehydration
o Lung diseases
o Living at high altitudes
o Bone marrow disorders
• Monitor treatment for anemia or other blood-related conditions
• Evaluate general health during routine check-ups or before surgery
Preparation:
Preparation for the Hemoglobin test is usually minimal:
1. Fasting:
o Not required for a basic hemoglobin test.
o If part of a larger panel (e.g., full health check), your doctor may advise fasting.
2. Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking (especially iron, B12, or folate).
3. Hydration:
o Being well-hydrated can help with easier blood draw and more accurate results.
4. Procedure:
o A small blood sample is collected from a vein (usually from the arm) or sometimes via a finger prick.
