Description
Why It’s Done
The Glucose Random test may be performed to:
• Screen for diabetes: It helps identify high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which may indicate diabetes.
• Monitor blood sugar levels: For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes to assess how well their blood sugar is being controlled.
• Evaluate symptoms of diabetes: Such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or blurred vision, which may suggest high blood sugar.
• Detect Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar levels can also be identified through this test, especially if a person experiences symptoms like shaking, dizziness, confusion, or weakness.
Preparation
• No fasting is required for the random glucose test, as it can be taken at any time of day.
• Normal diet and activities can continue before the test, though it’s useful to inform your doctor about any recent meals, medications, or symptoms that may influence the results.
• Blood sample: The test requires a simple blood draw from a vein in your arm.
