The Gardnerella vaginalis culture test is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of Gardnerella vaginalis, a type of bacteria commonly associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV). In this test, a sample is collected from the vaginal area and cultured in a lab to check for bacterial growth, specifically of Gardnerella.
This test helps confirm the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis, which occurs when the natural balance of vaginal bacteria is disrupted, leading to an overgrowth of Gardnerella and other anaerobic bacteria.

    Description

    Why It’s Done

This test may be done if you are experiencing symptoms of bacterial vaginosis or other vaginal infections, such as:
    • Unusual vaginal discharge (typically thin, gray or white, with a fishy odor)
    • Vaginal itching or irritation
    • Burning sensation during urination
    • Recurring vaginal infections
    The test can help:
    • Confirm a diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis
    • Differentiate BV from other vaginal infections like yeast infections or trichomoniasis
    • Guide appropriate treatment, especially in recurring or persistent infections
    • Screen during pregnancy, as untreated BV can lead to pregnancy complications such as preterm labor

    Preparation

    To ensure accurate results:
    • Avoid vaginal douching, creams, or medications for at least 48 hours before the test.
    • Avoid sexual intercourse for 24 hours before the test.
    • Do not use tampons before the test.
    • Schedule the test when you’re not menstruating, as blood can interfere with sample quality.
    • Inform your doctor of any recent medications or symptoms.
