F18 – DOPA PET CT is a diagnostic imaging test that combines Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) using a radioactive tracer called Fluorine-18 DOPA. This tracer is absorbed by certain nerve and tumor cells, helping doctors visualize neuroendocrine tumors and assess neurological conditions.

Description

Why It’s Done:

• To detect and locate neuroendocrine tumors (like pheochromocytomas or carcinoids).
• To evaluate neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease by assessing dopamine activity.
• To monitor tumor progression or response to treatment.
• To assist in planning appropriate treatment.

Preparation:

• Fast for 4 to 6 hours before the scan; only water is allowed.
• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
• Avoid caffeine and nicotine for 12 hours before the test.
• Avoid strenuous physical activity for 24 hours prior.
• Inform your doctor about any medications, especially related to neurological function.
• Wear comfortable clothing without metal.
• Notify the medical team if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
