Description
Why It’s Done
Doctors may order this test to:
• Evaluate menstrual irregularities, such as missed periods or abnormal bleeding.
• Assess fertility issues and monitor ovulation or ovarian function.
• Monitor hormone replacement therapy or medications that affect estrogen levels.
• Investigate symptoms of menopause or perimenopause.
• Diagnose disorders of the ovaries or testes, such as tumors or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
• Monitor fetal development or placenta function during pregnancy.
• Evaluate delayed or early puberty in children.
• Support diagnosis of gynecomastia or other hormonal imbalances in males.
Preparation
• Timing matters: In menstruating women, the test may be scheduled at a specific point in the menstrual cycle, as estradiol levels fluctuate.
• Fasting is not usually required, but follow your doctor’s instructions.
• Inform your doctor of any hormonal medications, birth control pills, or supplements, as these can affect results.
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm.
