Description
Why It’s Done
Doctors may order this test to:
• Confirm past infection with EBV.
• Distinguish between recent and past infections, especially when used alongside other EBV markers like VCA IgM, VCA IgG, and EBNA IgM.
• Evaluate unexplained fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, or fever—symptoms that may suggest mononucleosis.
• Support diagnosis of chronic EBV-related conditions.
• Monitor immune response in immunocompromised individuals.
Preparation
• No special preparation is required.
• Inform your doctor about any recent infections, vaccinations, or medications, especially if you’re immunocompromised or taking immunosuppressants.
• The test is done using a simple blood sample drawn from a vein in your arm.
