The DHEAS test measures the amount of Dehydroepiandrosterone-Sulfate (DHEAS) in your blood. DHEAS is a sulfated form of DHEA, a hormone mainly produced by the adrenal glands. It acts as a precursor to male and female sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen. Unlike DHEA, DHEAS is more stable in the bloodstream, making it a more reliable indicator for testing.

Description

Why It’s Done:

Doctors use the DHEAS test to:
• Evaluate adrenal gland function and detect adrenal tumors, adrenal hyperplasia, or adrenal insufficiency.
• Help diagnose conditions that cause excess androgen (male hormone) production, such as:
o Hirsutism (excess hair growth in women)
o Virilization (development of male traits in females)
o Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
• Investigate early or delayed puberty in children.
• Determine the cause of infertility, irregular periods, or acne related to hormonal imbalance.

Preparation:

• No fasting or special preparation is needed.
• Inform your doctor if you are:
o Taking hormone medications, including birth control pills or corticosteroids.
o Pregnant or undergoing hormonal therapy.
• A simple blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm
