Description
Why It’s Done
This test is recommended to:
• Diagnose typhoid or paratyphoid fever, especially when symptoms include prolonged fever, weakness, abdominal pain, or rash.
• Confirm Salmonella infection in patients with suspected bloodstream infections.
• Differentiate Salmonella species from other bacterial infections.
• Guide appropriate antibiotic treatment based on the identified strain.
It is especially useful when:
• A patient has not yet developed antibodies (making serological tests like the Widal test less reliable).
• Early and accurate detection of the pathogen is critical.
Preparation
• No special preparation is required from the patient.
• The test involves drawing a blood sample, typically collected using sterile techniques.
• Ideally performed before starting antibiotics, as prior antibiotic use may reduce bacterial growth and affect results.
• Inform the healthcare provider of any recent medications or clinical history.
