The Cul.Sens. – Semen Test (Semen Culture and Sensitivity Test) is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of bacterial or fungal infections in the semen. The sample is cultured to identify the type of microorganism responsible for an infection. After identifying the organism, antibiotic sensitivity testing is performed to determine which antibiotics can effectively treat the infection.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

This test is commonly recommended for:
    • Men experiencing symptoms of a genital or urinary tract infection, such as pain during urination, painful ejaculation, or pelvic discomfort.
    • Infertility investigations, especially if infection is suspected as a contributing factor.
    • Cases of chronic prostatitis or recurring infections.
    • Post-surgical or post-catheterization infections involving the male reproductive tract.
    Purpose of the test:
    • Identify the cause of infection in the reproductive tract.
    • Determine the appropriate antibiotics for treatment.
    • Guide targeted therapy, avoiding ineffective or broad-spectrum antibiotics.

    Preparation:

    • Abstain from ejaculation for 2 to 5 days before giving the sample, as recommended by your doctor or lab.
    • Avoid antibiotics for at least 48–72 hours prior to the test (if possible), unless otherwise advised by your doctor, as they may interfere with test results.
    • The semen sample is typically collected via masturbation into a sterile container provided by the lab.
    • Ensure clean hands and genitals before collecting the sample to avoid contamination.
    • Follow any lab-specific instructions, especially regarding sample timing and delivery
