The Cul.Sens. – Nasal Swab Test (Nasal Swab Culture and Sensitivity Test) is a diagnostic test used to detect and identify bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms present in the nasal passages. A sterile swab is inserted into the nostril to collect a sample from the inner lining of the nose. The sample is then cultured in a laboratory to grow any organisms present. If an infection is detected, antibiotic sensitivity testing is done to determine which medications will be most effective.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

This test is often recommended in the following situations:
    • Suspected nasal or sinus infections, especially if persistent or recurrent.
    • Screening for carriers of certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
    • Pre-surgical screening, particularly before procedures involving the nasal area or when there is a risk of spreading resistant bacteria.
    • Chronic sinusitis or upper respiratory infections that do not respond to treatment.
    Purpose of the test:
    • Identify the specific microorganism causing infection.
    • Guide the appropriate antibiotic or antifungal treatment.
    • Prevent the spread of resistant bacteria in healthcare settings.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is typically required.
    • Inform your doctor or lab if you are currently on antibiotics, as this may affect test results.
    • The procedure is quick and usually painless, though it may cause slight discomfort or tickling.
    • Avoid using nasal sprays or medications just before the test unless instructed otherwise
