A CT Head + Pituitary scan is a computed tomography (CT) scan that focuses on the brain and pituitary gland, a small but vital gland at the base of the brain responsible for hormone regulation.

This scan helps diagnose:

• Pituitary tumors (adenomas, cysts, or masses)
• Hormonal disorders linked to pituitary dysfunction
• Pituitary hemorrhage (apoplexy)
• Structural abnormalities in the sella turcica (pituitary fossa)
• Vision problems due to pituitary gland enlargement

Depending on the condition being evaluated, the scan may be done with or without contrast dye for better visualization of the pituitary gland.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    • Fasting:
      • For a plain scan: No fasting required.
      • For a contrast scan: Fasting for 4–6 hours before the test may be required.
    • Metal Object Removal:
      • Remove earrings, hairpins, glasses, dentures, piercings, or metallic objects near the head to avoid image distortion.
    • IV Contrast Injection (If Used):
      • A contrast dye (iodine-based) may be injected into a vein for better imaging of the pituitary gland.
      • Inform your doctor if you have:
Allergies to iodine or contrast dye
Kidney disease or diabetes (contrast can affect kidney function)
    • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
      Clothing:
      • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes without metal zippers or buttons near the head and neck.
    • Breathing & Positioning Instructions:
      • You will need to lie still on the scanning table.
      • The technician may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds during imaging.
    • Post-Procedure Care:
      • For contrast scans: Drink plenty of water to flush the dye from your system.
      • For plain scans: No special precautions are needed, and you can resume normal activities immediately.
