A CT Cervical Spine + CV (Craniovertebral) Junction scan is a computed tomography (CT) scan that provides detailed imaging of the cervical spine (neck region) and the craniovertebral junction (CVJ).
The craniovertebral junction includes:

• Occipital bone (base of skull)
• Atlas (C1 vertebra)
• Axis (C2 vertebra)
• Surrounding ligaments and soft tissues

This scan is used to diagnose conditions such as:

  • Fractures or trauma – Neck or skull base injuries from accidents or falls
  • Craniovertebral junction abnormalities – Congenital conditions like basilar invagination
  • Atlantoaxial instability – Instability between the C1 and C2 vertebrae
  • Degenerative diseases – Arthritis, cervical spondylosis
  • Herniated discs – Bulging or slipped discs affecting nerves
  • Spinal cord compression – Narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis)
  • Tumors or infections – Abnormal growths or bone infections
  • Rheumatoid arthritis complications – Affecting the upper cervical spine

A CT Cervical Spine + CV Junction (Plain) scan is performed without contrast dye and is primarily used for evaluating bone structures. If soft tissues, blood vessels, or nerve involvement is suspected, a contrast-enhanced CT or MRI may be recommended.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    Fasting Requirements
    • No fasting required – You can eat and drink normally before the test.
    Hydration
    • Drink water as usual before the scan.
    Clothing & Accessories
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, metal fasteners).
    • Remove all metal objects (jewelry, earrings, piercings, eyeglasses, dentures) to prevent interference with the scan.
    Medication Considerations

    • Pain relievers, blood thinners, or muscle relaxants – No special restrictions unless instructed by your doctor.
    Special Considerations
    • Pregnancy Alert: Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy.
    • Metal Implants or Previous Surgeries: Inform the technician if you have any neck implants, screws, or past cervical spine surgeries.
    • Claustrophobia Concern: Though CT scans are not as enclosed as MRI, let your doctor know if you feel anxious in medical imaging machines.
