Description
Why It’s Done:
The CMV PCR Qualitative Test is done to:
• Confirm active CMV infection, especially in immunocompromised individuals (e.g., organ transplant recipients, HIV-positive individuals, chemotherapy patients).
• Diagnose CMV-related illness when clinical symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or organ dysfunction are present.
• Determine whether CMV reactivation has occurred, particularly in people who have previously been infected and are at higher risk for complications.
• Monitor treatment effectiveness in patients receiving antiviral therapy for CMV infection.
The qualitative PCR test is ideal when you need a definitive answer about whether or not CMV is present, but not necessarily how much virus is present (for that, a viral load test would be used).
Preparation:
• No special preparation is required for the CMV PCR Qualitative Test.
• A blood sample (or another relevant fluid) will be taken, depending on the suspected site of infection.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any of the following:
o If you are taking any antiviral medications, as these can affect the test results.
o If you are experiencing symptoms of infection or have recently had a transfusion or organ transplant.
