The CMV IgG Antibody Test is a blood test used to detect Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to Cytomegalovirus (CMV). These antibodies indicate past exposure or previous infection with CMV.
Once a person has been infected with CMV, the virus remains in the body in a latent state, and IgG antibodies remain present for life, providing evidence of prior infection.
This test is often performed along with the CMV IgM test to distinguish between a past infection (IgG positive only) and a recent or current infection (IgM positive, possibly IgG positive too).

Description

Why It’s Done:

The CMV IgG test is performed to:
• Determine past exposure to CMV, especially in women who are pregnant or planning to conceive
• Assess immunity to CMV
• Help diagnose CMV-related illness when combined with IgM or PCR testing
• Evaluate the risk of CMV transmission in organ transplant recipients and donors
• Screen newborns or immunocompromised individuals who may have complications due to CMV
For pregnant women, the test helps determine whether a past infection has occurred, which is usually less concerning than a primary (first-time) infection during pregnancy.

Preparation:

• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider of:
o Any current or recent illnesses
o Any medications or supplements you are taking
o If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy
