The VZV IgG Antibodies Test is a blood test that detects IgG antibodies to the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) — the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. IgG antibodies typically appear after infection or vaccination and usually remain in the body for life, providing long-term immunity.
A positive IgG result indicates past exposure or immunity, either from a previous infection or vaccination.

Description

Why It’s Done:

This test is commonly performed to:
• Determine if a person is immune to chickenpox, especially before pregnancy, organ transplant, or starting immunosuppressive therapy.
• Confirm a history of chickenpox or vaccination.
• Assist in diagnosing shingles (herpes zoster) or VZV-related complications.
• Screen healthcare workers, teachers, or others at risk of exposure to VZV.

Preparation:

• No special preparation is needed for this test.
• Inform your doctor if you’ve recently received a varicella vaccine, had symptoms of chickenpox or shingles, or are taking any immune-modulating medications.
• A simple blood sample will be taken, typically from a vein in your arm.
