Description
Why It’s Done:
The CD4 Enumeration Test is commonly used to:
• Monitor the immune status of individuals infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
• Help determine the stage and severity of HIV infection.
• Guide decisions regarding the initiation or adjustment of antiretroviral therapy (ART).
• Assess the risk of opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients.
• Monitor immune recovery following organ or stem cell transplantation or in other immunodeficient conditions.
A low CD4 count may indicate a weakened immune system and a higher risk for infections.
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• Inform your doctor about any recent infections, vaccinations, or medications, particularly immunosuppressive drugs or steroids, as these may affect the results.
• A blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm for testing.
