The CD4 Enumeration Test is a blood test that measures the number of CD4+ T-lymphocytes (T-helper cells) in the bloodstream. CD4 cells are a type of white blood cell that plays a critical role in the immune system by helping coordinate the body’s response to infections.
This test is typically performed using flow cytometry and provides an absolute CD4 count (the number of CD4 cells per microliter of blood).

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

The CD4 Enumeration Test is commonly used to:
    • Monitor the immune status of individuals infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
    • Help determine the stage and severity of HIV infection.
    • Guide decisions regarding the initiation or adjustment of antiretroviral therapy (ART).
    • Assess the risk of opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients.
    • Monitor immune recovery following organ or stem cell transplantation or in other immunodeficient conditions.
A low CD4 count may indicate a weakened immune system and a higher risk for infections.

    Preparation:

    • No fasting or special preparation is required.
    • Inform your doctor about any recent infections, vaccinations, or medications, particularly immunosuppressive drugs or steroids, as these may affect the results.
    • A blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm for testing.
