Description
Why It’s Done
The test is used to:
1. Assess Chronic Cadmium Exposure
• To evaluate long-term exposure in individuals working in industries with cadmium risk (battery manufacturing, welding, metal plating).
2. Monitor Kidney Function
• Since cadmium accumulates in the kidneys, this test helps assess renal damage caused by cadmium toxicity.
3. Diagnose Cadmium Poisoning
• When symptoms such as kidney dysfunction, bone pain, or respiratory issues suggest possible cadmium toxicity.
4. Occupational and Environmental Health Surveillance
• To monitor workers or populations exposed to cadmium-contaminated environments or materials.
Preparation
1. Urine Collection
• Collect all urine produced over a 24-hour period, starting after discarding the first urine of the day.
• Collect every urine sample in the container provided by the lab for the next 24 hours, including the first urine of the following day.
• Keep the container refrigerated or in a cool place during collection.
• Follow lab instructions carefully to avoid missing samples, as incomplete collection can affect results.
2. Avoid Contamination
• Avoid exposure to cadmium sources before and during the test.
• Do not smoke or use tobacco products for at least 12–24 hours before and during urine collection, as tobacco contains cadmium.
3. Medications and Diet
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking.
• No specific dietary restrictions unless advised by your doctor.
4. Hydration
• Maintain normal fluid intake during the 24 hours unless instructed otherwise
