The Blood Culture – 2 Sets test is performed to detect the presence of bacteria or fungi in the bloodstream. Two separate sets of blood samples are collected from different sites, usually within a short time frame, to increase the chances of detecting bloodstream infections (bacteremia or fungemia) and reduce the risk of false-positive results due to skin contamination.

Each set typically includes:
• One aerobic bottle (for organisms that grow in oxygen)
• One anaerobic bottle (for organisms that grow without oxygen)

Description

Why is the Test Done?

• To identify the cause of bloodstream infections, sepsis, or fever of unknown origin
• To guide the use of targeted antibiotics or antifungals
• To detect infective endocarditis, a serious heart infection
• To monitor patients with indwelling catheters, immune suppression, or recent surgeries
• To help evaluate hospital-acquired infections

Test Procedure:
• Two separate venipunctures are performed (commonly from both arms or spaced 30–60 minutes apart)
• Blood is collected into aerobic and anaerobic culture bottles
• No special preparation is needed, but it’s important to collect before starting antibiotics
• The sample is incubated and monitored for microbial growth (usually over 5–7 days)
