Description
Why It’s Done:
The test is performed to:
• Detect tuberculosis (TB) in suspected cases.
• Provide a rapid diagnosis before culture results are available.
• Monitor treatment response in TB patients.
• Screen for AFB infections in other conditions like nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM).
• Identify infectious cases for public health intervention.
It is especially useful for diagnosing pulmonary TB through sputum smears, but it can also be used for extrapulmonary samples.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed for the test.
• For sputum samples:
o The best sample is an early morning deep cough specimen.
o Rinse your mouth with water before collecting to avoid contamination.
• Samples should be collected in a sterile container and sent promptly to the laboratory.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you are on anti-TB medications.
