The AFB Antibiotic Sensitivity – Sparfloxacin test is a laboratory procedure to determine whether Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria (the cause of tuberculosis) are sensitive or resistant to the antibiotic Sparfloxacin.
Sparfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic sometimes used as a second-line drug in treating drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). This test involves culturing the bacteria from clinical specimens and exposing them to Sparfloxacin in the laboratory to see if the bacteria’s growth is inhibited.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    • To assess whether Sparfloxacin will be effective in treating the patient’s TB infection.
    • To detect resistance to Sparfloxacin, especially in cases of MDR-TB or extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB).
    • To help clinicians tailor anti-TB treatment regimens based on bacterial sensitivity.
    • To avoid the use of ineffective drugs, minimizing treatment failure and the spread of resistant strains.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is required from the patient.
    • A clinical specimen (such as sputum or other body fluids/tissues) must be collected aseptically and sent promptly to the laboratory.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any ongoing TB or antibiotic treatments.
    • Since the test involves bacterial culture, results usually take several weeks
