Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a specialized MRI scan used to obtain detailed images of the bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, and pancreatic ducts. It is a non-invasive alternative to ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) and does not require an endoscope.

MRCP is commonly used to diagnose:

• Gallstones in the bile ducts
• Bile duct blockages or strictures (narrowing)
• Pancreatic duct abnormalities
• Tumors or cysts in the liver, bile ducts, or pancreas
• Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) – a chronic liver disease
• Congenital bile duct abnormalities

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    Pre-Test Guidelines:
    • Fasting:
Do not eat or drink for at least 4-6 hours before the scan. This helps clear the stomach and bile ducts for better imaging.
    • Medications:
Continue taking regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
If you have diabetes, consult your doctor about adjusting medications due to fasting.
    • Allergy & Medical History:
Inform your doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, aneurysm clips, or stents), as MRI uses strong magnetic fields.
Let the doctor know if you are pregnant or claustrophobic.
On the Day of the Test:
    • Clothing & Accessories:
Wear loose-fitting clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, hearing aids, glasses, and metallic objects before the scan.
    • Avoid Caffeine & Smoking:
Avoid caffeine and smoking for at least 12 hours before the test, as they can affect the bile ducts and pancreas.
    During the MRCP Scan:
    • The scan takes about 30-60 minutes.
    • You will lie still inside the MRI machine while images are taken.
    • No contrast dye is usually needed, but in some cases, gadolinium-based contrast may be used for better visualization.
    • The MRI machine makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
