The U1 snRNP (small nuclear ribonucleoprotein) Antibodies Test is a blood test used to detect autoantibodies against U1 snRNP proteins, which are components of the spliceosome involved in gene expression. The presence of these antibodies is commonly associated with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), but they can also appear in other autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, and polymyositis.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:
This test helps in the diagnosis and differentiation of autoimmune diseases, especially when symptoms overlap between multiple conditions. It is often ordered when a patient shows signs of joint pain, muscle weakness, skin changes, or Raynaud’s phenomenon.

    Interpretation:
    • Positive result: May indicate MCTD, especially when accompanied by relevant clinical features.
    • Negative result: Lowers the likelihood of MCTD but does not completely rule out autoimmune disease
