Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is used when there is a clinical suspicion of fungal infection, especially in complex, immunocompromised, or critically ill patients. Common reasons for ordering include:
• Diagnosing invasive fungal infections (e.g., aspergillosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis).
• Identifying rare or fastidious fungi not easily detected by standard culture methods.
• Guiding antifungal therapy based on accurate species identification.
• Supporting diagnosis in patients with prolonged fever, respiratory issues, or sepsis where fungal infection is suspected.
• Evaluating fungal meningitis or deep tissue fungal involvement.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is typically required.
• Preparation depends on the type of sample being collected:
o For CSF or tissue biopsies, you may need to follow fasting or pre-procedure instructions.
o For blood samples, routine phlebotomy is performed.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any ongoing antifungal treatment, which may affect test sensitivity.
o Any recent invasive procedures or infections.
