The Malarial Antigen Rapid Test is a quick diagnostic test used to detect specific antigens produced by Plasmodium vivax (Pv) and Plasmodium falciparum (Pf)—the two most common and clinically significant species causing malaria. This test uses a small blood sample and provides results within 15–30 minutes, making it valuable for early diagnosis, especially in remote or resource-limited settings.

Description

Why It’s Done:
This test is typically done when a person presents symptoms suggestive of malaria, such as:
• Fever with chills
• Sweating and fatigue
• Headache and muscle pain
• Nausea or vomiting

Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• A finger-prick blood sample is commonly used for this test.
• Inform your doctor about any antimalarial drugs you may have recently taken, as this might affect the result.
• Follow-up with a blood smear test (thick & thin) may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and assess the parasite load.
