The HPV Detection by PCR Test is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect the presence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in a sample (usually from the cervix, vagina, anus, throat, or penile area).
It uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology to amplify and identify specific strains of HPV, including high-risk types such as HPV-16 and HPV-18, which are linked to cancers (especially cervical cancer).
PCR is highly sensitive and specific, making it a preferred method for early and accurate detection of HPV infection.

Description

Why It’s Done:

This test is recommended to:
• Screen for high-risk HPV types that are known to cause cervical, anal, penile, or throat cancers.
• Follow up abnormal Pap smear results in women.
• Monitor women with a history of cervical dysplasia or precancerous changes.
• Assess HPV infection in men and people with genital warts or suspected HPV-related lesions.
• Aid in the diagnosis of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis or HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers.
• Support routine screening in women over 30 as part of co-testing with a Pap test.

Preparation:

• For women:
o Avoid douching, vaginal creams, or intercourse for 24–48 hours before the test.
o The sample is usually collected during a pelvic exam.
• For men or oral/anal testing:

• Inform your healthcare provider of:
o Any recent infections, bleeding, or menstrual cycle details.
