Description
Why It’s Done:
The HSV DNA test is ordered when:
• A rapid and accurate diagnosis of HSV infection is needed.
• There are active lesions, especially in the genital or oral area.
• A patient shows neurological symptoms suggesting HSV encephalitis.
• Newborns or immunocompromised individuals are suspected of having HSV.
• IgG or IgM antibody tests are inconclusive or not suitable for early detection.
This test is particularly helpful for:
• Diagnosing an active infection
• Differentiating between HSV-1 and HSV-2
• Guiding treatment decisions for severe or disseminated infections
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed for the test itself.
• The sample collection method depends on the symptoms:
o Swab of the lesion (best when sores are present)
o Spinal tap (for CSF) if testing for encephalitis
o Blood draw if testing for systemic infection
• Inform your healthcare provider if you are on antiviral medication, as it may affect results.
