Categories: ,

The Cyfra 21-1 test is a blood test used as a tumor marker, primarily for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It measures the levels of a fragment of cytokeratin 19, a protein released into the bloodstream when cancer cells break down. Elevated levels of Cyfra 21-1 may indicate the presence of certain cancers, especially lung cancer, and may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment or detect recurrence.

    Description

    Why It’s Done

The Cyfra 21-1 test is recommended for:
    • Supporting the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer, especially squamous cell carcinoma.
    • Monitoring treatment response in patients undergoing cancer therapy.
    • Detecting recurrence or progression of lung cancer after treatment.
    • Assessing prognosis in patients with known lung cancer.
While not typically used for cancer screening in healthy individuals, it is useful in confirmed or suspected cancer cases alongside other diagnostic tools (e.g., imaging, biopsy).

    Preparation

    • No special preparation is needed before the test.
    • Inform your doctor about any ongoing medications or treatments, as they may influence test results.
    • A simple blood sample is taken, usually from a vein in the arm.
