Why It’s Done:
This test is ordered to:
• Diagnose autoimmune gastritis and pernicious anemia
• Investigate causes of vitamin B12 deficiency
• Evaluate patients with symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, numbness, or neurological symptoms related to B12 deficiency
• Monitor autoimmune gastric conditions
Preparation:
• No special preparation is required.
• Blood is drawn from a vein in the arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements, especially vitamin B12 or proton pump inhibitors.
• No fasting is needed.
