The AFB Antibiotic Sensitivity – Lofloxacin test is a laboratory test that checks whether Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the bacteria causing tuberculosis) is sensitive or resistant to the antibiotic Lofloxacin.
Lofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic commonly used as a second-line drug for treating drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). In this test, cultured AFB bacteria from patient samples are exposed to Lofloxacin in controlled lab conditions to see if the bacteria’s growth is inhibited by the drug.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    • To identify if Lofloxacin will be effective in treating a patient’s TB infection.
    • To detect resistance to Lofloxacin, especially in multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) cases.
    • To guide clinicians in tailoring anti-TB therapy for better treatment outcomes.
    • To prevent the use of ineffective drugs, reducing the risk of treatment failure and further resistance development.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is required for the patient.
    • The patient’s clinical specimen (e.g., sputum, tissue, or body fluid) must be collected in a sterile container and transported promptly to the laboratory.
    • Inform the healthcare provider of any current TB or antibiotic treatments, as these might influence the test.
    • Because the test depends on bacterial culture, results typically take several weeks
