An X-Ray Dorsal Spine (Lateral View) is a side-view X-ray of the thoracic spine (also called the dorsal spine), which consists of the 12 vertebrae in the middle portion of your back. This view helps visualize the alignment, vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, and possible abnormalities more clearly than a front-facing image.

    Test Preparation

Preparation is generally simple, but here are important guidelines:

    • Clothing: You may be asked to wear a hospital gown to ensure no clothing interferes with the imaging.
    • Remove metal objects: Take off any jewelry, belts, or metal items around the chest, back, or waist area.
    • Bowel Preparation (if advised): In some cases, your doctor may recommend a mild laxative or enema to reduce gas or stool in the intestines, which can obstruct clear imaging of the spine.
    • Fasting: Not required.
    • Pregnancy: Inform the radiology staff if you are or might be pregnant, as X-rays are typically avoided unless absolutely necessary during pregnancy.

    During the Test
    • You will be asked to lie on your side on the X-ray table or stand sideways, depending on the equipment.
    • The technician will position you so the thoracic spine is clearly visible in profile.
    • You may need to hold your breath for a few seconds to reduce motion and ensure a clear image.
    • The procedure is quick and painless, typically completed in 5–10 minutes.

    After the Test
    • You can resume normal activities right away.
    • A radiologist will analyze the X-ray and send a report to your referring doctor, who will review the results with you.
