MRI Brain with MR Venography (MRV) is a specialized Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan that focuses on visualizing the brain’s venous (vein) system. This test helps detect abnormalities in the brain’s blood circulation, such as blood clots, venous malformations, or blockages.

MRV uses MRI technology to create detailed images of the veins without needing invasive catheterization, making it a safer alternative to conventional venography. In some cases, a contrast agent (gadolinium) is used to enhance vein visibility

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    • Fasting: Not required in most cases, but if contrast dye is used, fasting for 4-6 hours may be needed.
    • Clothing & Accessories: Wear loose-fitting clothes without metal (zippers, buttons, jewelry, or hairpins). You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
    • Metal Objects: Remove all metal objects, including piercings, watches, hearing aids, and dental implants, as MRI uses strong magnets.
    • Medical Implants: Inform the radiologist if you have any pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or metallic implants, as MRI may not be safe.
    • Claustrophobia: If you have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), let your doctor know. A mild sedative may be given.
    • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, especially if contrast dye is needed.
    • Contrast Dye (if applicable): If contrast is required, inform the technician about any history of allergies, kidney disease, or asthma.
