Have you ever looked at your blood test report and felt overwhelmed by all the numbers, abbreviations, and medical terms? You’re not alone. At NM Pet CT, we believe patients should feel informed and empowered. This guide will help you understand the basics of common blood tests and what your numbers might indicate.
🩸 1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC test evaluates overall health and detects a range of disorders, including infections, anemia, and more.
Key Components:
- Hemoglobin (Hb): Measures the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
🔹 Low Hb = anemia; High Hb = possible dehydration or polycythemia. - WBC (White Blood Cells): Indicates immune activity.
🔹 High WBC = infection or inflammation; Low WBC = potential immune deficiency. - RBC (Red Blood Cells): Carries oxygen throughout the body.
🔹 Too few RBCs can cause fatigue; too many may signal heart or lung conditions. - Platelets: Help with blood clotting.
🔹 Low = risk of bleeding; High = risk of clots.
💉 2. Blood Sugar (Glucose) Tests
Used to detect diabetes or pre-diabetes.
- Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS):
🔹 Normal: 70–100 mg/dL
🔹 Pre-diabetes: 100–125 mg/dL
🔹 Diabetes: 126 mg/dL and above - HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin): Shows average blood sugar over 3 months.
🔹 Normal: Below 5.7%; Pre-diabetic: 5.7%–6.4%; Diabetic: 6.5%+
❤️ 3. Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Test)
Checks for heart disease risk.
- Total Cholesterol: Should be below 200 mg/dL
- LDL (Bad Cholesterol): Lower is better (under 100 mg/dL is ideal)
- HDL (Good Cholesterol): Higher is better (above 60 mg/dL is protective)
- Triglycerides: Normal is under 150 mg/dL
📌 High LDL & Triglycerides = risk of heart disease or stroke.
🧪 4. Liver Function Test (LFT)
Assesses the health of your liver.
- ALT & AST: Enzymes that indicate liver damage when elevated
- Bilirubin: High levels cause jaundice
- Albumin & Total Protein: Check for liver and kidney function
💧 5. Kidney Function Test (KFT/RFT)
Monitors how well your kidneys are filtering waste.
- Creatinine: High levels may indicate kidney problems
- Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Elevated levels can signal poor kidney function
- Uric Acid: High levels linked to gout and kidney stones
🧬 6. Thyroid Profile
Checks the function of your thyroid gland.
- TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone):
🔹 High = hypothyroidism; Low = hyperthyroidism - T3 & T4: Thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism
