An X-Ray Whole Spine (Scout) is a preliminary or overview X-ray scan of the entire spine, typically done before a more detailed imaging test like a CT scan or MRI. It helps to “scout” or map the spine and guide the next steps of imaging or treatment.

Unlike standard diagnostic X-rays taken in AP (front) or LAT (side) views, a scout view gives a quick, general image of the spine to:

• Confirm positioning
• Identify the area of interest
• Ensure accurate targeting for further imaging

    Test Preparation

    Before the Test:
    • No fasting or special diet is needed.
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
    • Remove all metallic items such as jewelry, eyeglasses, belts, and clothing with metal zippers or buttons.

    Inform the Technician If:
    • You are pregnant or could be pregnant – even scout views involve radiation, so precautions must be taken.
    • You have any spinal hardware or implants, which may affect imaging.
