An X-Ray of the Styloid Process is a diagnostic imaging test that focuses on the styloid process, a slender, pointed piece of bone located just below the ear on each side of the skull. This small bone projects from the temporal bone and serves as an attachment point for muscles and ligaments associated with the tongue and throat.

    Description

    Test Preparation

     Fasting:
    o Not required; you can eat and drink normally unless otherwise instructed.
     Clothing & Accessories:
    o Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown.
    o Remove all metallic items from the head and neck area, including:
    Earrings
    Necklaces
    Hairpins
    Hearing aids
    Removable dental appliances (if advised)
    Inform the Radiologist If:
    o You are pregnant or may be pregnant
    o You’ve had neck surgeries, implants, or facial trauma
     During the Procedure:
    o You will be asked to sit, stand, or lie down depending on the required view (typically lateral or oblique skull views).
    o The X-ray will be focused on the base of the skull and upper neck area.
    o You may be asked to turn or tilt your head for optimal imaging.
    o Stay still and follow breathing instructions if asked to hold your breath momentarily.
